Q. What is the TrilogyEC?
A. The TrilogyEC Professional Edition was developed by Trilogy Solutions, Inc (TSI) as an absolutely FREE encrypted chat, instant messaging (IM) and file transferring application. TrilogyEC utilizes 256 bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) cryptography to deliver U.S. military grade security in an instant messenger/chat hybrid program. With the TrilogyEC, you can collaborate with up to 5 people simultaneously in a completely secure environment without the need (or risk) of public servers.

Q. Why is the TrilogyEC different than other chat/instant message applications?
A. TrilogyEC does not utilize public servers relay messages and files between users. Instead, every TrilogyEC acts as both the server and client. The TrilogyEC uses a higher level of encryption than any competitive product. The TrilogyEC offers global awareness and instant messaging without the need for centralized servers.

Q. Is the TrilogyEC really free?
A. Yes. The TrilogyEC Professional Edition is absolutely free to the public. TSI believes that security is critical to all communications and that everyone should be entitled to it.

Q. Who is the TrilogyEC for?
A. Trilogy Solutions designed the TrilogyEC for everyone. It is for military personnel, scientists, college students, families, government agencies, and so on. The need for security isn’t limited to national defense and the banking industry, although they are typically the only ones that can afford it. Everyone should be able to feel safe in that their communication to friends and loved ones is protected and private.

Q. How many people can I connect to at once?
A. The TrilogyEC Professional Edition allows up to 5 connections at any given time. This means that 5 people can be connected to each other at once. Global awareness (Buddy List) is unlimited and is maintained despite the connection limit.

Q. Can the TrilogyEC Professional Edition be used on large corporate and government networks?
A. As far as TSI is concerned, you may use the TrilogyEC for free on ANY network. Obviously, certain environments require approval for installing software. You should contact your local system administrators or FSO (Facility Security Officer) to get further information regarding the installation of new software.

Q. Why does the TrilogyEC ask me to provide information such as full name, phone number, email address and location?
A. This information is used ONLY to build the address books of the people that you connect to using the TrilogyEC. It is never sent to ANY server or other centrally located resource. You don’t even have to provide “real” information when creating your account. The end result should be that others will have an idea of who you are if they choose to initiate a connection to you in the future.

Q. How is my personal information protected within the TrilogyEC?
A. Everything that makes up your profile (including name, phone number, email, etc…) as well as your Address Book is stored using 256 bit AES encryption. If you would like to see this encryption at work, simply navigate to your profiles folder and open the “USERNAME.ENC” (profile data) or “USERNAME.EAB” (Address Book). You can use notepad to open these files to see the product of the encryption. Additionally, your user password is NEVER stored in ANY file.

Q. Can I change my TrilogyEC password?
A. Absolutely. You may change your TrilogyEC password at anytime while logged into the program. Simply access the “Config” screen (button is on left side of application) and go to the “About You” section. Enter your new password twice and click the Save button.
NOTE: Any chats saved by this user account will be inaccessible after the password is changed.

Q. Can I recover a lost or forgotten password?
A. No. In order to provide “absolute” security to the TrilogyEC, user passwords are used to generate a lengthy key that is then used to decrypt your user profile using the same encryption (256 bit AES) as the rest of the application.. The password itself is NEVER stored on any computer. We feel that this should provide a certain level of comfort to TrilogyEC users because not only can nobody at Trilogy Solutions, Inc recover your password, but neither can anyone else on the planet.

Q. Can I change the TCP/IP port that the TrilogyEC uses to communicate?
A. Yes. By default, the TrilogyEC uses TCP Port 80 for all communications, but you can change the port used. This is done by adding a switch to the shortcut target. Right-click on the shortcut to the TrilogyEC (what ever shortcut that you use to access the program) and select “Properties”. On the “Shortcut” tab, locate the “Target” field. Directly after .exe (or “, if one exists), add a blank space then the letter p, followed by another space and the port number that you wish to use.
Example Code:
"C:\Program Files\Trilogy EC\Trilogy_EC.exe " -p 4545
After the port is changed, you will only be able to connect to other TrilogyEC users that have specified the exact same port.

Q. Can I “lock” my TrilogyEC when I get up from my desk?
A. Yes. Lock functionality was built into the TrilogyEC for this specific purpose. Unlike most messenger type programs, which can be cumbersome to log out of, or hide, the TrilogyEC makes this a snap. Simply click the “Lock” button on the left side of the application (or hit CTRL+L) and your TrilogyEC is secured from prying eyes and will remain so until you return to unlock it.
When you lock the TrilogyEC, it will continue to receive chat messages and file transfers as well maintain any connections.

Q. Can I move my TrilogyEC user profile from one computer to another?
A. Yes, you can move you TrilogyEC user profile from one computer to another. Using Windows Explorer, locate the directory in which the TrilogyEC and the profile directory.
Default is:
C:\Program Files\TrilogyEC\Profiles
Once inside the Profiles directory, find the folder that corresponds to your user name. Copy your username folder to some form of removable storage (USB thumb drive, floppy disk, CD, etc…).
Copy your folder to the Profiles directory on the new computer. You may now log in using your transplanted account.
Keep in mind that your received files directory also resides within your profile folder, so you may want to clean it out prior to transfer.

Q. Do I have to wait for the TrilogyEC intro screen to complete before I can use the application?
A. No. You always have the option to simply click on the introduction to bypass it.
Q. Can someone using a different communication program interact with me using the TrilogyEC?
A. No. In order to maintain the highest level of security, the only thing that can communicate with a TrilogyEC is another TrilogyEC. In order to provide compatibility with other products, TSI would have had to lower our standards to that of other companies. Security is at the heart of every TrilogyEC feature and function. Absolutely no exceptions were made.

Q. Does TrilogyEC support NAT?
A. You bet! TrilogyEC was specifically designed to work in NAT (Network Address Translation) environments. For users not located on the same logical network, the TrilogyEC only requires that one of the participants have a non-NAT, or PUBLIC, IP address. To connect in this scenario, the person (or persons) with the PRIVATE IP address should call the person with the PUBLIC IP address.
